Comprehensive Analysis

1. Symbolic Obstacles: The Dunya, Iblis, and Time

During the journey on the Buraq, the Prophet (saw) encountered a seductively dressed woman who tried to lure him; Jibril explained she represented the Dunya, warning that if the Prophet had responded, his Ummah would have preferred this world over the Akhira. Further along, Iblis called out from a dark, hidden corner off the path, attempting to cause him to veer off his objective. Finally, an old, decrepit woman appeared on the side of the road, symbolizing that the time remaining for the world is as short as the remainder of her life. Jibril’s consistent advice for all these distractions was to not pay any attention and keep pushing forward toward the goal.

2. The Methodology of Success and Seeking Knowledge

The solution to these complex distractions was a simplistic one: to keep the eyes on the prize and move forward without stopping to examine the hurdles. This demonstrates a profound lesson for believers in their journey toward Allah, where obstacles are natural and must be overcome with focus. Additionally, the Prophet’s habit of asking Jibril questions about what he witnessed shows that when one feels uncertain or unsure, they should not be afraid to ask those with knowledge. This establishes the importance of staying in touch with the Qur’an and Seerah to find answers to life’s problems.

3. Encounters with Musa and Ibrahim: Family and Brotherhood

The Prophet was greeted by Ibrahim, Musa, and Isa, whom Jibril introduced as “family” rather than strangers. Musa was described as a tall, handsome, and imposing man with straight hair who maintained a real and raw relationship with Allah, often speaking loudly to his Lord. Ibrahim, the Prophet’s forefather, sat under a widespread tree and encouraged the Prophet to make dua for his Ummah, noting they are the weakest and last of all nations. Both Prophets welcomed him as the Arab Prophet who gave sincere advice to his people.

4. The Virtues of the Ummah and Prophetic Facilitation

Musa expressed deep admiration for the Ummah of Muhammad, describing them as people whom Allah would give knowledge and patience from His own and whose sins would be transformed into good deeds upon repentance. Allah promised that a good deed would be rewarded tenfold, while a sin would only be recorded as one bad deed. Musa even asked to lead or be among this Ummah, but Allah reserved them for His beloved Muhammad. Based on this, Musa advised the Prophet to request ease and facilitation for the Ummah, as the deen is intended to help people flourish rather than suffer.

5. Arrival at Al-Aqsa and the Sacred Lights

Upon entering Jerusalem, the Prophet noticed two beams of light shooting from the masjid toward the sky; Jibril identified the light on the right as the mihrab of Dawud and the light on the left as the grave of Maryam, the mother of Isa. Jibril then tied the Buraq to a ring outside Masjid Al-Aqsa, the same ring used by all previous Prophets. Inside, the Prophet was shown the women of Paradise (hur al yoon), who identified themselves as the good women of Jannah reserved for clean and righteous men.

6. The Great Congregation: Leading the Prophets in Prayer

The masjid quickly became flooded with over 125,000 Prophets, some in ruku and others in sujood, all performing Tahiyatul Masjid. After the adhan was called by Jibril, a consensus was reached—or Jibril guided the Prophet forward—to have Muhammad lead the prayer. He led the entire fraternity of Messengers in two rakaat, officially acting as the Imam of all the Prophets. Following the prayer, the Prophet turned to face the congregation, and each Messenger spoke praises of their Lord in a historic and unprecedented assembly.
