Episode Summary

This episode details the Prophet’s (saw) journey through the first five Heavens during the Al-Mi’raj. It covers the formal protocols at the celestial gates, where Jibril demonstrated perfect etiquette, and the Prophet's encounters with Adam, Isa, Yahya, Yusuf, Idris, and Haroun. The narrative describes the symbolic punishments witnessed for adultery, usury, and the mistreatment of orphans, while highlighting the 'red-carpet' reception given to the Prophet by the angels and previous Messengers. This journey served as a profound divine consolation, honoring the Prophet after years of persecution and personal loss in Makkah.

Key Highlights

  • Jibril demonstrated perfect etiquette (adaab) by introducing himself and the Prophet at the gates of Heaven.

  • The Prophet witnessed graphic punishments for sins like interest-taking (inflated bellies) and devouring orphan wealth (swallowing fire).
  • Isa (as) and Yahya (as) were seen in the second sky, described as looking similar with a radiant appearance.
  • Yusuf (as) was described as possessing half of all beauty, outshining others like the full moon among stars.

  • The repeated formal welcomes at each sky symbolized a grand 'red-carpet' honor provided by Allah to ease the Prophet's worldly burdens.

Comprehensive Analysis

1. Celestial Etiquette and the First Gate

As Jibril and the Prophet (saw) began the Al-Mi’raj, they first reached the Sama ad-Dunya, the sky of this world. The gate was guarded by the angel Ismail, a monumental figure who commands billions of angels and has never left his post since creation, except to attend the Prophet’s funeral. Jibril demonstrated perfect etiquette (adaab) at the gate by explicitly identifying himself and the Prophet, teaching that one should introduce themselves by name rather than simply saying “It’s me”. The gatekeeper questioned if Muhammad had been made a Messenger, as the angels had been waiting for millennia for this specific visit once his mission was established.

2. Adam (as) and the Portals of Souls

Upon entering the first sky, the Prophet encountered Adam (as), who appeared exactly as he did on the day of his creation. Adam was seen judging the souls of his progeny as they were presented to him. To his right was a portal with a beautiful fragrance for the souls of believers, and to his left was a black cavernous space with a wretched stench for the disbelievers. When Adam looked to his right toward the gate of Jannah, he would grin with happiness, but when looking toward the gate of Jahannam on his left, he would cry in deep sadness. He welcomed the Prophet as a “righteous son and righteous prophet”.

3. Graphic Visions of Punishments for Major Sins

The Prophet was shown the realities of Hell to warn his Ummah. He witnessed people eating rotten, spoiled meat while ignoring fresh roasted meat, a punishment for those who chose adultery and fornication over permissible marriage. Others had inflated bellies so large they were trampled by the people of Pharaoh; Jibril identified these as those who consumed interest and usury. The Prophet also saw individuals with camel-like faces having burning embers placed in their mouths, which burned their insides—a punishment for those who devoured the wealth of orphans and the poor.

4. Meeting the Radiant Messengers: Isa, Yahya, and Yusuf

In the second sky, the Prophet met the maternal cousins Isa (as) and Yahya (as), who were dressed alike and accompanied by their followers. Isa was described as having a fresh, radiant appearance and a reddish complexion, closely resembling the leader Urwa bin Mas’ud. Ascending to the third sky, the Prophet met Yusuf (as), whom he described as possessing half of all beauty. The Prophet noted that Yusuf outshone everyone else in beauty just as the moon outshines the stars during the night.

5. Prophetic Etiquette: The Station of Salaam and Ego

Throughout these encounters, the Prophet always initiated the salaam to the other Prophets. This behavior highlights a key lesson: the higher a person’s status and authority, the more they should feel the need to approach and greet others first. The Prophet never found it beneath his status to initiate greetings, even with children, demonstrating that true ranking does not lead to ego or pride (nafs). This reflects the high status Allah granted him over all other messengers.

6. The Fourth and Fifth Skies: Idris (as) and the Eloquent Haroun

The fourth sky was inhabited by Idris (as), fulfilling the Quranic promise that he was raised to a high station. In the fifth sky, the Prophet met Haroun (as), whose beard was half-white and reached down to his belly. Haroun, an eloquent preacher beloved by his people, was seen advising and telling stories to Banu Israel. This meeting served to exonerate and dignify Haroun, who had been historically slandered by his people while Musa was away.

7. A Divine Red-Carpet Welcome

The repeated, formal protocol at each celestial gate was a symbolic grand welcome to honor the Prophet. While he had been stoned, cursed, and slandered on earth for the past twelve years, the inhabitants of the heavens had been excitedly waiting for his company. This journey was a divine opportunity to remove the Prophet’s worries, showing him that while he was mistreated by people on the ground, he was deeply honored and dignified by those in the sky.
