Episode Summary

In the 13th year of Prophethood, the Prophet (saw) faced a definitive challenge from the Quraysh resulting in the miraculous splitting of the moon. Simultaneously, the mission in Yathrib flourished, leading to a secret delegation of 73 Muslims arriving in Makkah for Hajj. This episode details the high-stakes negotiations and the Second Oath of Allegiance at Mina, where the Ansar pledged to defend the Prophet and his companions even at the risk of war. The narrative concludes with the appointment of twelve leaders to oversee the new community and the Prophet's profound commitment to remain with the Ansar through life and death.

Comprehensive Analysis

1. The Miracle of the Moon Splitting

In the 13th year of Prophethood, the mushrikoon of Makkah, seeking to end the Prophet’s mission, demanded a mind-blowing and unbelievable sign. Following divine instruction, the Prophet met them in the evening outside the Haram and pointed toward the full moon, which miraculously split into two parts. Narrations describe the split being so distinct that Mount Hira could be seen between the two halves. Despite witnessing this for two hours and hearing confirmation from travelers, the Quraysh dismissed it as “longer-lasting magic,” leading to the revelation of the opening verses of Surat Al-Qamar.

2. The Journey from Yathrib and the Qiblah Incident

While the Prophet faced showdowns in Makkah, Mus’ab bin Umair reported remarkable progress in Yathrib, where almost half the city had accepted Islam. A group of 73 Muslims travelled secretly among 200 nonbelievers to meet the Prophet during Hajj. During the journey, a leader named Barrah bin Ma’rur began praying toward the Ka’bah instead of the official Qiblah in Jerusalem, as he felt a deep internal conviction toward it. When he later consulted the Prophet in Makkah, the Prophet smiled and told him he only had to wait a little longer for the official change.

3. The Secret Meeting and Abbas’s Warning

The group of 73 men and 2 women met the Prophet secretly in a tent in the valley of Mina. The Prophet was accompanied by his uncle Abbas, who, despite not being a Muslim at the time, was looking out for his nephew. Abbas delivered a sobering and stern warning to the people of Yathrib: he highlighted that the Prophet still had support and protection from Banu Hashim in Makkah, and if they were not prepared to defend him against all enemies or if they might eventually surrender him, they should abandon the plan now.

4. Terms of the Second Oath and the Promise of Jannah

The Prophet addressed the Ansar by reciting Qur’an and making dua before stating his requirements. He asked them to worship Allah alone, provide a safe place for the Muslims, and defend him and his companions as they would their own lives and families. When the Ansar asked what they would receive in return for such a heavy responsibility, the Prophet’s answer was singular and profound: “You will get Jannah”. The pledge also included enjoining good, forbidding evil, and speaking for the sake of Allah without fearing criticism.

5. As’ad bin Zurara’s Clarification and the Pledge

As the group rose to take the pledge, the young As’ad bin Zurara interceded to ensure the magnitude of the commitment was understood. He warned his people that bringing the Prophet to Yathrib meant challenging the rest of the Arabs and would likely result in war and the death of their best people. The Ansar passionately rejected his caution, telling him to get out of the way as they would never give up this opportunity. Following this, every person in the tent, including the two women, came forward one by one to give their oath of allegiance.

6. The Twelve Leaders and a Lifelong Commitment

To manage the community in his absence, the Prophet requested that twelve leaders (Nukaba) step forward—nine from Khazraj and three from Aws. He likened their role to the disciples of Isa, charging them as caretakers of their respective people. When asked if he would eventually return to Makkah and leave them after achieving victory, the Prophet smiled and gave a foundational promise of loyalty: he stated that they were blood for blood, vowing, “I am from amongst you, and you are from me” and promising to fight whoever they fought.
